There are several controversies linked in baseball such as steroid use, corked bat and many others but these do not affect the ratings of the game maybe because the fans know that these are somehow needed by players to improve their skills. Honestly, the game is not that easy. It takes a lot of skills and strength to play, so it is understandable that players need to improve in different kinds of ways.
Improvements make players like Maguire, Bonds, Sosa, Griffey and Palmero. A player who does one hit per game does not entice fans in effect lessens sales and that is bad for business. Most people view the use of prohibited drugs like steroids and other enhancing medicines in the same footing as giving themselves surgeries which will later on improve their skills.
So why should we ban them? Both enhancement drugs and surgery serve the same effect to the player.
In a way, cheating is a way of life in baseball. Players are impliedly given the leverage to improve their skills one way or the other, otherwise most of them will end up lousy. Who wants to see a lousy player in the field? If a shot in the arm is needed to make the game exciting then why not allow them?
People seem to accept these facts. Acceptance can be seen in patterns of the baseball controversies. If you have not noticed most of the players linked to suspected steroid use are sluggers.
People do not want to talk about the pitchers and the big shot players who are clearly much bigger and faster than the rest of the players. They seem to focus on other players who are less popular. After all, this is a man’s game and man need to toughen up.
Baseball fanatics understand the essence of dedication and perseverance of the players even if it means stretching the limits and breaking some rules. This is why even after all the controversies that are linked to the game and players, the fans go to such length just to see a game with their favorite teams.
You can see them going ballistic in every hit, waiving their banners, proudly shouting names and even painting their faces to show their support. They love the game! In the end, what you see in the news and what you read in your daily papers do not matter to them. |
