Signs of Rosacea

If you notice your complexion is getting on the red side, you go around looking flushed and blushed, you might even have a red nose along with dry flakey skin and possibility pimples there is a strong possibility that you have a skin condition known as rosacea. This used to be known as acne rosacea so if you hear the term it the same condition.

More women have it than men but if the men do have it, the symptoms will probably be more severe. The majority of people that have it are blue eyed with fair skin and light hair. It is not often seen with dark haired people. The usual age group for rosacea to show up in is from twenty to fifty years of age and it affects at least fourteen million people in the United States alone.

Usual Symptoms

Look for a persistent redness, this may come out as a flush or blush. There may be pimples on the face, a general thickening of the skin. The eyes are uncomfortable and gritty feeling; there might be a burning sensation along with little blood vessels under the skin.

Causes and remedies

No one knows the real cause of rosacea but there are things that will make the condition worse.

  • Extreme weather should be avoided; this goes for sun cold and wind.
  • Avoid hot showers, baths, loofahs, towels that are rough, astringents and perfumes.
  • Use sent free cosmetics.

Rosacea is controlled more than it is cured and you might want to make a record of what you eat and do to try and find out what will cause a flare up. Drinking plenty of water is a good idea and be careful what you put on your skin Sun should be avoided, use sun screens, hats or whatever you can think of.  If you feel you might have rosacea, you really should see a dermatologist, get his or her advice and see if there are any prescriptions you could take to relieve your condition. This is to prevent damage to your skin.

If your doctor tells you that your condition is rosacea you might be given either or both oral antibiotics or a gel to help keep this under control. The antibiotics will help reduce the embarrassing redness.  Steroids are commonly prescribed for rosacea because they relieve the symptoms better and faster than anything else, but if you are going to use topical steroids, do not use them long term as they will do a reversal and make the symptoms worse.
