Gone are the days wherein body building was a famous sport in America. Body builders used to be spoken about in households. Today, not much people can even name one body builder! Long time ago, television channels like Fox Sports Network used to have a lot of shows about body building. During that time names like Haney and Arnold Columbo were so famous.
Arnold Columbo was one of the leading figures in body building in the 70s. He brought life and glamour to bodybuilding. Many people idolized him. But in the late 1970s, he admitted that he was using anabolic steroids to help him in his performance. Since Arnold Columbo was setting the standard in bodybuilding, many professional bodybuilders followed his suit and began taking steroids themselves.
As a sport, body building has been overshadowed by other sports like baseball and basketball. What caused the downfall of body building? Steroids have bad effects on the human body and there was a lot of controversy about it until now. Steroids gave a lot of bad publicity in bodybuilding to the point that the media only shows the bad side of bodybuilding. This brainwashed the people into thinking that bodybuilding is bad. People began to lose interest in bodybuilding because there has only been one Mr. Olympia winner for the past number of years in the Mr. Olympia competition.
Today, bodybuilders are not as famous as they were before. If you compare today and the past, World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE is as famous as body building. Everyone knows about these WWE wrestlers like The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Triple H etc. They even have their own movies now. For bodybuilding to become a popular sport once again, Ben Weider needs to employ tactics that will help increase the public's awareness in the sport.
The actions taken to make body building a popular sport includes web video and radio. People want to be entertained; they do not want to look at something that is boring. Ben Weider should adapt the strategies and entertainment techniques that Vince McMahon employed to attract more and more audiences. Aside from that, there should be a television contract on body building so that people can get to see it weekly. People spend a lot of time watching television.
Audience participation is one of the things that make reality shows popular. These fans can vote on their favorite performer, thus giving them a chance to feel that they belong and that they can make a difference. Bodybuilding has Mr. Olympia, this show is still prestigious but the mechanics it employs are outdated. They should make the show more interesting and allow fans to participate! |
